Shake it Up!

During a recent visit to a local craft store, I discovered a very pretty set of snow globe stickers from K&Company (SW Botanical Snob Globe Stickers). As soon as I saw them, I knew they'd be perfect for creating instant snow globe paperweights.

The set of stickers (shown above) includes 13 pieces that feature the watercolor paintings of Susan Winget. The pieces include a large snow globe sticker (2 1/4"), four smaller snow globe stickers (1 7/8"), and eight small, coordinating stickers.

For this project I used the 2 1/4" snow globe sticker. Because it was slightly smaller than the paperweight kit's mounting board, I covered the mounting board with coordinating paper. (The Paper Company, Metallic Cover 12 x 12, Blue Bell).

The snow globe sticker was applied directly to the colored paper on the mounting board. Here's a tip. If your snow glob sticker has an unsmooth edge. Use a pair of scissors to carefully trim any jagged areas. Just be sure not to open the seam.

Here's how the paperweight is assembled:

Figure 2: Place your artwork image-side down into the recessed area on the bottom of the paperweight.

Figure 3: Cover the base of the paperweight with the pre-cut, self-adhesive bottom pad. This piece is also included with each paperweight kit.

I love this paperweight because it has a lot of beauty and sparkle. When it's on my desk, it's hard to resist picking it up and shaking it throughout the day.

 text-align: center;">

I believe all of us have a soft spot in our hearts for particular items we've found ourselves collecting over the years. Victorian trading cards have been a favorite of mine for more than a decade. There's just something about these pieces of card, beautifully printed with decorative advertising.

This die cut trading card, advertising Clark's Mile End thread, has taken up residency in a box of ephemera I've had for years. The ladies have been through a lot over the past century, and are showing a few wrinkles. Their colors are still very vibrant, though, as if they were just printed yesterday.

Because the card was quite delicate, and had layers paper on the back, I applied white glue to the reverse side and spread it evenly. Avoid applying too much glue towards the edges.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vPRk4Z1QlTA/T2PgCo-v0NI/AAAAAAAAAh4/0FTIEnF1lY0/s1600/clarks4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I did this by using a sheet of scrapbooking paper in bright kiwi. The paper is slightly metallic, giving the design a slightly modern twist.

The photo above shows the paperweight kit's mounting board covered with kiwi paper. The trading card was glued to the kiwi paper and allowed to dry completely. (Tip: Place the top surface of your paperweight on the item to weigh it down as it dries.)

Here's how the paperweight is assembled:

I'm sorry it's been so long since my last blog post. I've collected so many wonderful finds over the past several weeks, I can't wait to get started on my new projects!

This paperweight design is all about finding beautiful, useful artwork on items you may otherwise overlook when you're rummaging through bins at the flea market. Once you spend some purpose-driven time looking for items to display in your paperweights, you'll be surprised how quickly things will begin to catch your eye.

This birthday card was in a box of assorted greeting cards and other paper I purchased at the Long Beach Antique Market (Long Beach, CA) this winter. This card is extraordinary because it features hand-painted flowers, a metallic gold banner, and an stunning ribbon in the most beautiful shade of blue.

The photo above shows the artwork after it was attached to the paperweight kit's mounting board. The mounting board is pre-cut to fit the Heirloom Rectangle paperweight. Because the board is self-adhesive, no glue was needed. The portions of the card that extended beyond the edge of the mounting board were trimmed off.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mIQByCmrzv0/T2On06rlejI/AAAAAAAAAhA/TMEhQm1QlcI/s1600/card4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; If you don't have any old Valentine's Day cards at hand, check with a local antique shop to see if they have a selection available.

I had the luxury of sorting through a few boxes of old Valentine's Day cards earlier this month and chose three simple, die-cut cards (pictured above) for these projects. Choose cards with fun graphics that will fit well within the display area of your paperweight.

Important note: Vintage cards can be very delicate, so be especially careful. A coating that makes some cards shiny may also craze when the paper is bent.

To My Sweetheart

The first paperweight was created by cutting out the artwork on the Valentine's card. I used a metallic paper background that shimmers when the light catches it. This color of the paper (Blue Steel) compliments the dark blue bow in the little girl's hair. It's also a nice backdrop for the red heart.

I used a glue stick to apply the card to the background.

Puppy Love

I'm a little heartbroken about this paperweight because I accidentally destroyed it when I attempted to change the background (note the earlier warning about the fragility of clear coatings).

The background is a soft shade of green. I later realized it should have been blue to resemble a sky over the fence (duh!). Plan B was to replace the green paper with a photo of a sky and clouds I tore out of a magazine. It would have looked perfect. (Emphasis on would have.)

St. Valentine Greet to You!

I chose this card because I love the floral dress and huge, oversize bows. All little girls should have such a dress. Don't you agree?

My goal with this design was to take a die-cut card and place it on a background that would make it look as though it wasn't die-cut at all. I chose a piece of scrapbook paper in a yellow baroque pattern that really brought it all together.

Paperweight Featuring a Collage of Antique Sewing Needles

This paperweight features a collage of antique sewing needles and a beautiful, Victorian button set on a background created with the remains of an old needle book from England.

Working with paperweights is a little like working with shadowboxes... only in miniature. You just need to use lightweight items that will fit within the dimensions of the paperweight's interior space (especially the depth).

For this project I'm using the remains of an old needle book for the background. The flap of the needle book is made of textured paper with gold embossing that lends a rich look. I'm also adding a paper package of needles, a metal needle box, and a faceted button with beautiful sparkle.

In order to create a base to build the design off of, I applied a scrap of green paper to the paperweight's mounting board and trimmed the overlapping material.

The old needle book was glued directly to the paper-covered mounting board with Aleene's Tacky Glue. The fabric and paper that went beyond the edge of the mounting board was trimmed and the extra fabric was used to cover the exposed areas of green paper along the left and right edges.

Prior to adhering the button and needle holders to the background, I experimented with a few layouts before selecting the one above. Each piece was put in place with Aleene's Tacky Glue. I also used a glue dot to secure the flap of the paper package of needles.

After the glue dried completely, the design was placed face-down onto the recessed bottom of the paperweight (PhotoWeights: Heirloom Rectangle). The paperweight was finished by applying the velvet bottom pad.

This design is more complex than the previous paperweight project that was created with a card of sewing fasteners. All you need are a few more elements and a little patience to come up with a layout you love.

I hope you enjoyed today's sewing paperweights. Which one do you like the most?

Craft Paperweights With Vintage Sewing Notions

I recently purchased a box of antique and vintage sewing notions I thought I'd put to excellent use to show you how easy it is to turn something simple into a unique accessory for your desk. For you Etsy store owners, these are also perfect for resale.

For this project I chose a vintage card with three rows of metal hooks held in place by stitches of black thread. The printed graphics, imperfect stitches, and the dimensional hooks look incredible under glass. Instead of using a card of hooks or fasteners, you can also complete this project with a card of buttons. Just make sure whatever you use isn't too thick to fit into the recessed cavity on the bottom of the paperweight.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WXg078Ffym4/Tih1f5myHXI/AAAAAAAAAVo/zu61wAt0EjM/s1600/betty4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The paper was placed on the self-adhesive side of the mounting board and the excess material was trimmed.

Once the glue dried completely, any portions of the card that went beyond the edge of the mounting board were trimmed.

For this project I used the Heirloom Rectangle paperweight kit. The mounting board (with applied card) was placed face-down into the recessed area on the bottom of the paperweight. I finished by applying the velvet bottom pad.

I'll be posting another paperweight project today that's a little more complex. Which one is your favorite?

Bookends - Standing Up to Time

In these days of Kindles and Nooks, I'm so thankful that bookends have not fallen by the wayside. There's something so timeless about them. I hope they never go out of style.

Bookends have always been one of my favorite accessories because they keep my reference books and notepads within reach on my desk. I also use them at home to keep everything from DVDs to vintage cookbooks in order.

What are your bookends holding up these days?

Here are a few bookends I love:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Whenever I see children's vibrant chalk drawings of flowers, landscapes, and stick figures, I can't help but smile.

These directions for creating sidewalk chalk came from the July/August 2011 issue of Country Living. These pieces of chalk can be formed in plastic candle molds (such as the ice cream cone mold used to create the chalk in the above photo.) These molds may be found at spiritcrafts.net.

Step One: In a disposabe bowl, mix three tablespoons of tempera paint ($3 for one pint; dickblick.com) with one cup of cold water. Slowly add one and a half cups plaster of Paris ($3.33 for four and a half pounds; dickblick.com) and stir until the lumps dissolve. (The mixture should have the consistency of extra-thick yogurt).

Step Two: Pour the mixture into each half of the mold. Gently tap to release air bubbles, then let the halves sit for two minutes before carefully closing them together to create the unit; tape shut.

Step Three: Let the mold sit for 24 hours, then open and carefully remove the chalk. Allow the chalk to dry for another 24 to 48 hours before using.

Turn Drab Notepads Into Designer Desk Gear

Last week I discovered a new magazine called Fresh Style. It's quickly become one of my favorite crafting magazines because it's filled so many projects - many of which I can't wait to try.

Fresh Style includes five sections:

Handmade Projects - Reinvent ordinary items and thrift sotre finds with our quick and clever DIY projects.

Inspiring Spaces - Find your creative muse in one of these fab interiors, from a budget-savvy city apartment to a laid-back beach house.

Creative Ways - Bring a fresh look to areas in and around your home with resourceful ideas using everyday things.

Life & Style - Take a look at the innovative worlds and inspiring spaces of our favorite artists and designers.

Weekend Updates - Combine ingenuity and chic style in a whole-room revamp you can achieve in a weekend.

I wanted to share one of my favorite project ideas with you from the Summer 2011 issue.

Photo Credit: Fresh Style, Summer 2011

If you're anything like me, you have at least one basic notepad on your desk that you can quickly grab to jot down an appointment, address, or phone number. The top of mine are covered with advertising for the office supply store I purchased them from. How ugly is that?

Now you can ditch the drab notepads and be the center of office envy.

To give your 'Plain Jane' notepads a designer touch, simply cut a strip of decorative paper or card stock to fit the top of the notepad and glue it into place. Finding beautiful, patterned paper is easy. Craft stores such as Michael's typically carry more than 100 different designs by the sheet near their scrapbooking supplies.

I hope you love this project as much as I do. I can't wait to bring you something new tomorrow.

Hand Embroidered Crafting Shelves

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
